Domain Name - This is your identity on the web. Ideally you would have your company name followed by an extension such as .co.uk, .org.uk, .com e.t.c. All sites on the web have a unique identity known as an IP number. This number would look similair to this: 213.67.456.23 this is confusing for us to remember, so the domain name was invented to make it easier for us. A computer would see the numbers, we see the name.
Hosting - Imagine the World Wide Web to be a city where you live. If you were to rent a flat in this city, you would be expected to pay rent for your private space. This is how hosting works, if you have a Web Site you must rent some space on the World Wide Web to display the site. A Web Host supplies this service and this is why it is known as hosting.
ISP - Internet Service Provider, companies that supply internet services such as email addresses, dial up connection facilities, Web Space(hosting). Major ISP's include Virgin, AOL, BT and Freeserve.
Modem - A piece of hardware which enables you to connect to the World Wide Web via your telephone line. Modems are mostly fitted inside computers but exterior ones are available too.
ISDN - Similair to modem but is a big improvment when it comes to speed of connection. An ISDN line is required and often an ISDN network card would need to be purchased as an additional feature for your computer. This can be used in adition to or instead of your standard 56k modem.
Broadband or ASDL - The next generation of internet connections. Much faster download capabilities which is ideal for very large files. Broadband is only generally available in areas of high population such as inner cities.
